Montenegro – Beyond Overlanding

Montenegro
October 5-15th 2025

There’s no other country in Europe which features such dramatic, high, rocky mountains, so many glacier lakes and deep canyons on a relatively small area, like Montenegro. Simply perfect for all forms of adventure travel, it’s a haven for hikers, bikers, as well as overlanders, and we’ve been guiding our highly successful Montenegro Highlands overlanding tour there for the last ten years. However, the participants have always longed for the high 2000+ m peaks of mountains like Durmitor, Komovi or Prokletije, which are, with their alpine hiking single-trails, inaccessible for drivers. So this tour takes you a step further – it gives those who are not lazy to hike, and fit enough to endure some serious hiking trails, an opportunity to reach some truly spectacular peaks that were previously just photographed from a distance while our cars.

Tour coverage

Expedition starts in the far north of Montenegro, in the small mountain town of Žabljak, which is a starting point for all hiking trails in the Durmitor national park. Day one will be a combined day of driving and hiking, with a substantial (3-4 hours) hike at a certain point on the roundtrip of Durmitor, enjoying some of the most rugged scenery in Montenegro. The driving part will be a combination of offroad and tarmac, with the return to the same camp at the end of the day.

Day two starts with a hike around the Black lake, after which you will drive to the Ćurevac scenic viewpoint parking lot, before you take the 1 km hike to perhaps the most impressive viewpoint over the Tara canyon, which is the deepest in Europe. Upon completing these hikes, it’s time to drive out into the real wilderness of the Sinjajevina plateau, the biggest highland plateau in Europe (averaging 1700 m in altitude), where you will camp at one of our exclusive, well hidden wild campspots at about 1800 m, with a spectacular view of the starry sky and the surrounding mountains.

Day three takes you further through the wilderness of Sinjajevina, following the rugged ridges, and crossing over the Lola mountain in the direction of Moračke mountains, ending the day at Trebješko lake, the largest of the highland lakes of Montenegro, at the altitude of 1700 m. As you will arrive to the lake relatively early, you will have the option to either have a long afternoon enjoying by the lake, or taking a 2-hour hike to the nearby peak Stožac (2140 m), which offers some splendid views.

On day four you depart from the Trebješko lake on a rocky road downwards to the Mrtvica canyon, perhaps the most spectacular canyon in Montenegro, where the group will arrive at a nice campspot on the banks of the Mrtvica river. There will be about half a day left for a hike up and down the Mrtvica canyon, a spectacular hiking trail which was carved into the vertical cliffs by military engineers.

First part of day 5 is reserved for resupplying. On a combination of tarmac and gravel forest roads you reach the small tourist town of Kolašin, where you refuel and resupply food, before you venture on a roundtrip of Bjelasica mountain. After some really spectacular driving trails in the southern part of the mountain, you will pass through a ski resort and reach the 2 highest peaks of Bjelasica (both over 2000 m), where you will take a 2-hour hike to the peaks and the lake inbetween them, before you settle in a beautiful camp run by the Janketic family, which doesn’t have electricity, but does offer hot showers, internet, and an oportunity to have delicious traditional Montenegrian dinner!

At the foot of the Komovi peaks

Day 6 takes you further on a roundtrip of Bjelasica, before continuing in the direction of Komovi, the second highest, and most alpine-like mountain range in Montenegro, where you will set up camp. Day 7 will be fully devoted to hiking the attractive rocky peaks of Komovi, all higher than 2400 m!

Day eight takes you down from Komovi tu Andrijevica for refueling and resupplying, and then continues on a beautiful rountrip of the Mokra mountain, rich with pinetree forests to an altitude of almost 2000 m (with a short hike lasting for 2-3 hours), to end the day at a traditional shepperd hut, with a dinner prepared by the local shepperds, followed by camping with the shepperds.

On day 9 you drive down from Mokra Gora to Plav lake, and then via Gusinje enter the Prokletije national park, where you will take a hike to Popadija, offering you a splendid view of some of the most awe inspiring peaks of Prokletije (also known as the Albanian Alps), including the highest peak Maja Jezerce, almost 2700 m high. Day 10 features a half-day roundtrip of the national park and the mountain roads leading in the direction of Kosovo, before you return to Plav to finish the tour.

What else you should know about the tour?

You will timely be supplied (one month prior to the tour start) with the information how to reach the tour starting point. Please secure that you have your travel insurance before starting the tour, because insurance for your car is handled individually, depending on the country you come from. We expect you to arrive with a vehicle in good technical conditon, which can endure ten days of moderate offroading. This tour does not require an advanced level of offroad experience and skills. There will be parts of the tour when we won’t have a chance to refuel for several days so you should have a fuel tank (optionally with additional fuel cans) that can guarantee covering 250 km without visiting a petrol station. All major credit cards (Visa, Master, Maestro, etc.) work in Montenegro (either on ATM machines or for paying goods), and the official currency in Montenegro is Euro. You’re advised to have at least a small amount of cash for small expenses in the mountainous areas.

Average tour difficulty is easy to intermediate. In practice, that means that we will be travelling on decent quality dirt roads most of the time, with only occasional chances of encountering mud (depending on weather conditions). There will be sections of rocky terrain, where care should be taken not to damage vital parts of the underbody (especially where we take shortcuts completely offroad, it’s necessary to watch out for concealed rocks in high grass). We will not have any deep water crossings on our route (so no snorkel is necessary). For hiking trips it is vital to be in good physical condition, capable of walking from 3 to 15 km in a single hike, on terrain which is often steep and rocky.
